  Caro alunos

indicados.

  Cumprimentos
Fernando Pereira

Work Objectives:*

The SeLF-ICN project aims to develop new visual analysis tools to
extract and identify semantic elements in light field images, e.g., the
faces of persons captured by a security camera. Light field images are
acquired by a new generation of cameras which provide richer
representations of the visual world. These tools will be after
integrated with a new networking mechanism for referencing the extracted
image elements by a name that is routable directly in the network layer,
instead of using a server address to locate a video file therein, as in
current IP.

This research position targets the exploitation of the richer
information that is captured by the emerging light field cameras. The
resulting scene representation allows, for instance, to extract objects
at multiple focus planes independently of the focus used when taking the
picture, to analyse the image from different viewpoints, exploiting the
available directional information. It also allows to extract richer
feature sets for various analysis purposes.

It is desirable that images captured by online cameras, or identified
regions of interest within the images, are enhanced with information
allowing them to be coded and stored in the network in a distributed way
and requested by name (or features) by users and applications (e.g., for
comparison against a database), via the network layer itself. While many
application scenarios can be considered, to focus the work, the project
will consider a specific type of application scenario highly impacted by
face detection, namely video-surveillance.

The objectives of the work include.

- To develop new light field imaging pre-processing algorithms, such as
denoising, and new feature extraction techniques exploiting the richer
information captured by the light field cameras;

- To develop new face detection and recognition algorithms for light
field images, including the computation of a set of soft biometrics,
such as gender or age group, taking surveillance as the reference.

*Place of work:*

The work will be developed at the Instituto de Telecomunicações based at
the Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon, under the
supervision of Professors Paulo Correia and Fernando Pereira.

*Duration:*

18 months (subject to a performance assessment after the initial 6 months).

Start date: 15^th September 2016 (or soon thereafter).

*Monthly salary:*

Value for monthly allowance: 980 € (net), according to table values of
the scholarships awarded directly by the FCT, in the country
(www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores). The payment will be made by bank
transfer.

*Selection criteria:*

Selection of the candidates will be performed by evaluation of the
submitted documents according to the following two criteria: (i)
Curriculum vitae/Academic evaluation (measured on a scale of 1 to 20) –
40%; Suitability of the candidates’ profile to the project based on the
relevant work experience in the tasks described in the work plan
(measured on a scale of 1 to 20) – 60%;

An interview will be done to the top listed candidates by the selection
jury, if necessary.

Note: If the jury considers that none of the applications has the
required qualifications, the jury has the right to not admit any of the
applicants.

*Jury:* Professors Paulo Correia, Fernando Pereira and João Ascenso.

*Communication of the results:*

Results will be published at the Instituto de Telecomunicações, Lisbon.
The selected candidate will be notified by email.

*Deadlines and Documents:*

Motivation letter explaining the interest in the position, Detailed
Curriculum Vitae with transcripts, Recommendation Letter(s); the
application documents shall be sent by email to paulo.correia at lx.it.pt
and fp at lx.it.pt. Deadline for applications: 9 September 2016.

*Closing Date:* 09-09-2016

*Email:* paulo.correia at lx.it.pt and fp at lx.it.pt
