Our colleague José Bioucas Dias</div><div class="">passed away yesterday.</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">He has been with IT since the beginning. Always available to help, with</div><div class="">his profound knowledge of signal processing, he become a reference not</div><div class="">only for many of us, but also worldwide.</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">He left but his memory will stay with us.</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">Carlos</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">————————</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">For those of you that did not know him the following notes prepared by</div><div class="">Prof. Mário Figueiredo are a modest tribute to Colleague and a Friend</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">José Manuel Bioucas-Dias was a full professor at Instituto Superior<br class="">Técnico, University of Lisbon, where he obtained all his academic<br class="">degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering and spent his entire<br class="">academic career. He was also a Senior Researcher at Instituto de<br class="">Telecomunicações, having been at IT since its foundation.<br class=""><br class="">José Bioucas-Dias dedicated his research to the area of signal and<br class="">image processing, with an emphasis on inverse problems and with a<br class="">focus on applications to remote sensing. In this area, he was widely<br class="">considered a world-leading authority, having made many highly-relevant<br class="">and influential scientific and technical contributions.<br class=""><br class="">For his scientific work, José Bioucas-Dias was elevated to IEEE Fellow<br class="">in 2016. In 2017, he received the David Landgrebe Award, from the<br class="">Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society of IEEE, “For outstanding<br class="">contributions in the field of remote sensing image analysis”. In 2018<br class="">he was named Distinguished Lecturer by the IEEE GRSS. In 2015 and<br class="">2019, he was included in the prestigious “Highly Cited Researchers”<br class="">list, reserved to the world elite of researchers with the greatest<br class="">impact in their fields.<br class=""><br class="">In addition to being an excellent researcher, a world reference in<br class="">remote sensing, José Bioucas-Dias also had a remarkable dedication to<br class="">teaching and advanced training. He supervised and co-supervised 20 PhD<br class="">students and more than 10 post-doctoral fellows from Europe and China.<br class="">He created the first PhD course in inverse problems in image<br class="">processing and, during his career, he taught numerous courses, always<br class="">with great dedication and very high educational and scientific<br class="">quality, in the areas of signal processing, telecommunications,<br class="">estimation and detection theory, information and communication theory,<br class="">remote sensingh, to mention only the most significant.<br class=""><br class="">José Bioucas-Dias has made remarkable contributions to the progress<br class="">and advancement of engineering and science in Portugal and in the<br class="">world, as well as to our country's scientific projection and prestige.<br class="">His premature disappearance is a huge loss and a deeply sad event for<br class="">all who knew him up close.</div><div class=""><div class="">
