  Dear CMul students

While it was not my intention to travel more until the end of this
semester,*I come here to tell you that next week, days 11 and 12 April,
there will be no CMul Lectures. To compensate the missing theoretical
lectures, there will be a 3 hours long theoretical lecture on Thursday,
April 14, at 3pm, in room 1.3. *This long lecture will be very important
because, by coincidence, will be fully dedicate to audio (notably MP3)
coding.

Because you deserve an explanation, I should tell you the reason for
this change ...

Google/YouTube are organizing the next April 11-12, a YouTube World
Research Summit at their premises (and all at their expenses) in San
Francisco for which they invited what they called the 'world top
professors in Media Creation, Social Interactions, and Video
Processing/Infrastructure' (in this case, 25 professors from US and
Europe). The idea is to have YouTube top managers presenting the invited
people their ideas about the future and labs, and hear our feedback and
suggestions.

While I though about rejecting this invitation to avoid missing the
CMul lectures, I concluded after that this would be a silly decision as
the students themselves will finally, although indirectly, benefit from
my presence at this Summit and what I will learn there. I hope you
agree ...

  Regards
Fernando Pereira
