Dear Colleagues

Today I bring to you sad news. Our colleague José Bioucas Dias
passed away yesterday.

He has been with IT since the beginning. Always available to help, with
his profound knowledge of signal processing, he become a reference not
only for many of us, but also worldwide.

He left but his memory will stay with us.

Carlos

For those of you that did not know him the following notes prepared by
Prof. Mário Figueiredo are a modest tribute to Colleague and a Friend

José Manuel Bioucas-Dias was a full professor at Instituto Superior
Técnico, University of Lisbon, where he obtained all his academic
degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering and spent his entire
academic career. He was also a Senior Researcher at Instituto de
Telecomunicações, having been at IT since its foundation.

José Bioucas-Dias dedicated his research to the area of signal and
image processing, with an emphasis on inverse problems and with a
focus on applications to remote sensing. In this area, he was widely
considered a world-leading authority, having made many highly-relevant
and influential scientific and technical contributions.

For his scientific work, José Bioucas-Dias was elevated to IEEE Fellow
in 2016. In 2017, he received the David Landgrebe Award, from the
Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society of IEEE, “For outstanding
contributions in the field of remote sensing image analysis”. In 2018
he was named Distinguished Lecturer by the IEEE GRSS. In 2015 and
2019, he was included in the prestigious “Highly Cited Researchers”
list, reserved to the world elite of researchers with the greatest
impact in their fields.

In addition to being an excellent researcher, a world reference in
remote sensing, José Bioucas-Dias also had a remarkable dedication to
teaching and advanced training. He supervised and co-supervised 20 PhD
students and more than 10 post-doctoral fellows from Europe and China.
He created the first PhD course in inverse problems in image
processing and, during his career, he taught numerous courses, always
with great dedication and very high educational and scientific
quality, in the areas of signal processing, telecommunications,
estimation and detection theory, information and communication theory,
remote sensingh, to mention only the most significant.

José Bioucas-Dias has made remarkable contributions to the progress
and advancement of engineering and science in Portugal and in the
world, as well as to our country's scientific projection and prestige.
His premature disappearance is a huge loss and a deeply sad event for
all who knew him up close.
